Police Chief's S.C.A.N. Newsletter

March 2010

The month of March brings with it milder temperatures and melting snow. During early morning hours, however, be mindful of frozen dew that may yet continue to linger on streets and walkways, possibly creating icy, slippery conditions.

Let’s not forget our obligation to the IRS, with April 15th fast approaching,

Identity theft is something we all need to be aware of and one of the ways identity thieves gain access to our personal information is through our mailboxes. Retrieve your mail from your mailbox as soon as you can after delivery, and be sure to shred all junk mail before throwing it out. You can reduce the risk of mailbox identity theft by opting-out of pre-screened, pre-approved credit card offers by calling 1-888-567-8688 or visit www.optoutpre-screen.com. Also, many institutions will include an “opt-out” clause in the materials which will enable you to prevent the sharing of your personal information with other parties. Outgoing mail is also at risk of being rifled through or hijacked, so you may want to drop off mail with payments and other sensitive information in a U.S. Postal Service letter box.

Residents are reminded to have address numbers affixed on homes and apartments should police, fire or EMS personnel be dispatched to your home. During an emergency, seconds are sacred and time should not be wasted searching for the proper address.

Spring is just around the corner and all residents are asked to become familiar with Town ordinances relating to bulk and waste pick-up as we clean out our attics, cellars and yards. Also, this is a good time to replace the batteries in our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Remain safe, and for those who observe St. Patty’s Day, don’t forget to wear something green on the 17th!
